Ok. We're about to talk about a....well...less than pleasant topic. Our monthly visit from the fertility Gods...yes, our periods. If you're like me, you absolutely loathe that time of the month. I turn into this absolute psychopath...but that's another story for another day. LOL What I want to talk about today is The Moon Cup...this awesome device (the technical term is a "menstrual cup") that you use instead of tampons or pads.
Unlike tampons and pads, there is NO WASTE associated with The Moon Cup, which means far less biohazards in our landfills. Think you're not contributing waste with your pads and tampons? Click here to see some comparison photos and I think you'll change your mind. ; )

Also unlike tampons, The Moon Cup doesn't absorb fluid, it collects it, which means that you (and your vajayjay) are far less irritated during menstruation. I'm not going to go into all my issues surrounding my period, but I will tell you that its horribly uncomfortable and is almost ALWAYS followed by an awful yeast infection because of tampons. Not anymore!
The Moon Cup is soft, easy-to-use, comfortable, and the best part for me was that I only had to empty it a couple of times throughout my period! There are two sizes (one for post-vag-birth women and one for the rest of the female population...lol) and there are two choices: The Keeper, which is made out of latex and The Moon, which is silicone. I went with The Moon Cup just to be on the safe side, since I've had irritation problems in the past.
All in all, I absolutely LOVE my Moon Cup and don't think I'll ever go back to tampons. Sure, all menstrual fluid collection devices are polar opposites of what we're used to seeing as women. Most of us have grown up with disposable pads and tampons, so the thought of using a "collection device" and actually having to deal with our own...you know...is gross. But seriously, its not bad at all...far less horrible than I was thinking. You get used to it...and the comfort my Moon Cup provided me far outweighed any unpleasant "dealing with it" parts that are involved with it. Bottom line, I'm officially DONE with pads and tampons and I think if more women tried these cups, they'd be done too!
Buy It: You can buy The Keeper and The Moon Cups from www.thekeeper.com. Each retails for $35 which will save you $445 over the course of ten years (which is how long you can use these cups!)
Win It: One lucky TCC Reader will win a Keeper or Moon Cup!

During the bleaching process, a toxic byproduct known as dioxin is created. Some of that may remain in tampons.

wow! never gave this much thought but,
One study found that 80 percent of the monkeys exposed to dioxin developed endometriosis, and that higher levels of exposure caused the development of more severe forms of the disease. Two of the monkeys in the study died due to endometriosis.

Yay! I received my new cup today! Thank you for enabling me to break my addiction to disposable commercial feminine hygiene products, helping me reach my goals of lowering my over all waste output and informing all women that there ARE alternatives that are actually cheaper, cleaner, safer and easier on our bodies than disposable tampons and paper and plastic pads. You RULE!!!
